A warm welcome from the Maltings Missile Team

The Maltings Missile of the Maltings Academy School in Witham, is a Greenpower Electric 24 volt motor-racing car, built within the school by the pupils, with the help of teachers, co-opted external engineers, parents and sponsoring companies, which allows us to compete in a number of Greenpower endurance races throughout the country on well known motor racing circuits.

Who are Greenpower? - Greenpower promotes engineering as a rewarding career to anyone aged 9-25, while also focusing on environmental sustainability, improving teamwork and participation within the community.

Aim of Greenpower - To advance education in the subjects of sustainable engineering and technology to young people.

The team of Maltings Academy students have worked tirelessly updating and incorporating the new rule changes of 2011 into our innovative vehicle, named the Maltings Missile. Building upon our successful 2010, Qualified 8th fastest car in the country for the national final, 2nd - Ford Dunton Technical Centre, Best Presented Team - Bedford Autodrome and Best newcomer - Goodwood Motor Circuit and our two 4th places, we are confident of entering a competitive car for 2011, which will hopefully place within the top ten nationally.

Two of the staff in the team have competed before, Ian Webdale with the John Bramston School several years ago and Tom Bollan for the past 3 years with the Plume School, Maldon. Building a Greenpower car can be as challenging or as straightforward as you want to make it. It is essential to balance the capabilities of the students with the demands of the facilities and the budget available to us.

Our inspiration and desire to achieve a high placing on the grid comes from other teams such as C.A.U.C, TSR and the Philip Morant School (Colchester) to name but a few. What is particularly pleasing is the ethos of the event which means that other teams will always be willing to help one another out both before and at the races, sharing tips on design, contacts for parts and assisting with finding solutions for problems that are encountered trackside. The spirit of Greenpower and the excitement of the race draws the students and staff into the competition and there really are no other competitions in Design & Technology on a similar scale.

Keep track of all our actions via this website, or alternatively come and watch the races as they are all free. For more info on The Maltings Missile's upcoming events click here
